Note:
On August 16, 1896 George Tarmack of Port Costa, California discovered gold on a tributary of the Yukon River which, when
word of the discovery reached Seatle and San Francisco, caused a stampede of gold-seekers to the Klondike region of Western
Canada. Most of these prospectors reached the area through the ports of Dyea and Skagway in southwest Alaska, traveling to
the Klondike via Chilcoot Pass or White Pass. Because of the difficulty of hauling equipment to such a remote location and
actually working the ore after arrival, some miners chose instead to buy and sell claims which gave rise to numerous "grubstake"
companies. The town of Dawson City prospered as a result of the gold boom, but most who came to the area looking to get rich
left disappointed. By 1898 the Klondike gold excitement had begun to fade, and the discovery of gold near Nome, Alaska the
following year diverted the attention of prospectors.
